The contemporary take on pin-up culture is all about creativity and inclusivity. While there are still examples of this pop art form being used to objectify women, increasingly pin-up vernacular is employed to subvert these expectations, instead emphasizing the parallel traditions of female empowerment and erotic self-awareness.

It’s squarely within that latter interpretation that the Miss Pinup RVA competition places itself. Now in its third year, contestants—which can include femme-presenting participants of any gender—will compete for the title based on their scores for poise, presentation, positivity, retro-pinup aesthetic, and charisma. The two previous champions, Bonnie De-lovely (2016) and Freeda Cheeks (2017), will be in attendance to crown this year’s winner.

Conceived by burlesque impresario extraordinaire Deanna Danger, founder of Boom Boom Basics, a portion of the event proceeds will be donated to Safe Harbor, a local nonprofit offering comprehensive services for survivors of domestic violence, sexual violence, and human trafficking. Besides the competition, a slew of related events are scheduled, including a classic car competition, vendor market and food trucks, an appearance by The Boomettes Dance Troupe, and musical performance by Weeping Molly. It’s all going down on Sunday, September 30 at Hardywood Park Craft Brewery. For those who want to throw their hat in the ring, contestant applications are open until September 17.

For this month’s pin-up, we caught up with Deanna Danger herself, along with the two previous champions and Deanna Marie, owner of event sponsor One Stop Pinup. Bonnie De-lovely was gracious enough to host us at Bombshell Brazilian Waxing and Beauty Lounge for an afternoon of primping and posing. May the best pin-up win!
